The name, which translates to \u201cWeaving the People Together\u201d, sets out the principles and values that we will embody to advance our work to provide a culturally appropriate and authentic framework and work environment.<\/p>\n<p>August 2023 marked an important milestone in our cultural journey, with more than 30 of our OCS NZ colleagues participating in our first cultural development wa\u0304nanga (workshop) at Mataatua marae, in Ta\u0304maki Makaurau (Auckland). The wa\u0304nanga focused on Ma\u0304ori cultural perspectives, concepts, values and principles.<\/p>\n<p>The wa\u0304nanga also explored Te Tiriti of Waitangi | The Treaty of Waitangi, providing the team with an overview of Te Tiriti from both a historical and contemporary perspective, as well as covering the principles of Te Tiriti and their relevance in a modern society.<\/p>\n<p>Managing Director, Gareth Marriott also had the privilege of wearing our beautiful pa\u0304ke (traditional Ma\u0304ori cloak), Whiria te Ta\u0304ngata, for the first time on a marae. The pa\u0304ke woven by Auckland Operations Manager, Ra\u0304winia Wright, from harakeke\u00a0(flax), symbolises unity and cultural interconnectedness.\u00a0\u00a0 which Auckland Operations Manager, Ra\u0304winia Wright, spent three months harvesting and preparing the harakeke (flax) to weave into it.<\/p>\n<p>Over three months Ra\u0304winia visited several OCS branches harvesting and preparing the harakeke from across the North and South Islands, before presenting the completed pa\u0304ke\u0304 at the OCS Conference as a stunning visual embodiment of Whiria Te Ta\u0304ngata.<\/p>\n<p>This symbolic piece will be a living reminder of the importance of OCS celebrating and embracing our cultural diversity.<\/p>\n<p>The OCS management team also took part in a Cultural Competency &amp; Development course, Te Ka\u0304kano. Aimed at creating safe spaces for colleagues of all nationalities to engage with Te Ao Ma\u0304ori (the Ma\u0304ori world view) and support their confidence and growth in implementing learnings in our workplaces, the sessions were well attended.<\/p>\n<p>The six-hour long sessions focused on building cultural confidence and kotahitanga (unity of purpose). It supported colleagues to think deeper and explore what integration of Te Ao Ma\u0304ori into their lives looked like, as well as providing an introductory understanding of te reo Ma\u0304ori (the Ma\u0304ori language) and exploring tikanga Ma\u0304ori (Ma\u0304ori customs and practices).<\/p>\n<p>Te Ka\u0304kano will be offered to other OCS colleagues in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>OCS cultural advisor, Dr.\u00a0Jim Mather, shared a powerful\u00a0whakatauki\u00a0(saying):<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNa\u0304 to\u0304 rourou, na\u0304 taku rourou, ka ora ai te Iwi.\u201d Translated, it means: \u201cWith your basket and my basket, the people will thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This whakatauki\u00a0encapsulates the essence of unity, collaboration, and collective wellbeing.
