However, a temporary role evolved into a full-time Area Manager position, and three decades later, he remains a trusted and respected member of the team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had other job offers over the years,\u201d Pete says. \u201cBut I never left because OCS was good to me and I respected the people around me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That loyalty has gone both ways. Under Pete\u2019s leadership, his region boasts an impressive list of long-term clients. For many, it\u2019s not just about pricing, but relationships, follow-through, and trust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople remember how you made them feel. Whether you showed up. Whether you listened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s still the same work \u2013 but the expectations are higher\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The job might still involve quoting, cleaning and supporting sites \u2013 but today\u2019s environment brings a different layer of visibility, compliance and accountability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything\u2019s got to be documented now,\u201d Pete says. \u201cBack in the day, you\u2019d just go in, do the job, and move on. Now there\u2019s a system, a sign-off, a paper trail \u2013 and customers can see how their work is tracking while you\u2019re still doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pete hasn\u2019t resisted the shift. In fact, he\u2019s helped others adjust. Whether it\u2019s navigating audits, quoting through digital platforms or setting up jobs to meet customer SLAs, he understands that technology isn\u2019t replacing the work \u2013 it\u2019s reinforcing the trust behind it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that the cleaning\u2019s changed,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s just that you\u2019ve got to have a plan, and you\u2019ve got to be able to back it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That level of transparency gives customers peace of mind \u2013 knowing they\u2019re working with a company that doesn\u2019t cut corners, stands behind its standards, and looks after its people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Synchronised swimming, anyone?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Pete\u2019s seen just about everything on site \u2013 including a few moments that still make him laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a couple of window cleaning lads doing some external glass at a local council water treatment plant. To reach one section, they pushed a 6-metre plank across the top of an open water tank. It was solid enough for one of them \u2013 but they thought they\u2019d get it done quicker if they both went out at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inevitable happened. The plank snapped, and both operatives landed waist-deep in the tank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were fine \u2013 just wet, embarrassed, and scrambling back to the side while the customer\u2019s site team watched on. The jokes started straight away: \u2018Training for synchronised swimming?\u2019 \u2018No one\u2019s drinking that water now!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While it might not fly under today\u2019s safety protocols, Pete says the story is a reminder of how far the industry\u2019s come \u2013 and how humour, when handled well, can defuse even the messiest of moments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou\u2019re only as good as the worst cleaner behind you\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pete is proudest of the teams he\u2019s helped build. Over the years, he\u2019s hired, trained and guided dozens of colleagues \u2013 many of whom are still with OCS today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was never about micro-managing. If someone was struggling, I\u2019d be there. But mostly, I trusted them to get on with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His legacy isn\u2019t just in the contracts retained \u2013 it\u2019s in the confidence and capability of those he\u2019s helped along the way. His support is steady, understated, and values-driven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re only as good as the worst cleaner behind you,\u201d he says. \u201cIf one person drops the ball, it affects the whole team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mindset \u2013 of shared standards, mutual support and personal accountability \u2013 is what the OCS TRUE Values are all about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A steady presence in a changing world<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now in his sixties, Pete could\u2019ve walked away. But instead, he\u2019s chosen to stay on in a part-time role \u2013 one that lets him keep supporting others, mentoring new managers, helping resolve customer issues, and providing backup when things get busy.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s still the go-to for urgent quotes, tricky customer requests, or just knowing how to get something sorted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t interfere, but I\u2019m around.
