The Role of Prevention in Facilities Management<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Mosquito control is often viewed as a seasonal or reactive service. In reality, it is a critical part of how organisations manage health risks, protect occupants and maintain operational continuity.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For universities, hospitals, commercial buildings and other high-occupancy environments, a single mosquito breeding site can quickly become a wider public health concern. Effective facilities management therefore requires a proactive approach, identifying and addressing risks before they affect the people who use and depend on these spaces every day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This challenge was highlighted during the 4th University-Wide Mosquito Misting Programme<\/a> at the University of the Philippines Los Ba\u00f1os (UPLB)<\/a>, where more than 50 pest management organisations and industry partners came together to support mosquito population control across the campus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Covering more than 20 buildings, including academic facilities and student residences, the initiative reflected the scale of planning and coordination required to protect large, complex environments. It also demonstrated an important principle of modern facilities management: prevention is often more effective than response.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

A Collaborative Approach to Mosquito Control<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Representing OCS Philippines were members of the company’s Pest Control<\/a> Services team, led by Electro Balbuena<\/a>, Operations Manager and Licensed Exterminator & Fumigator, Board of Director for the Pest Control Association of Visayas (PCAV) and P.R.O. (External) for<\/span> <\/span>Philippine Federation of Pest Management Operators Associations, Inc. (PFPMOA)<\/a>, <\/span><\/span>together with Rommel Ruffin III, Pest Control Supervisor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Working alongside industry peers and stakeholders, the team contributed to a coordinated effort aimed at reducing mosquito-related risks across the university community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The programme highlighted the importance of collaboration when managing environmental health risks in large estates. From educational institutions to commercial workplaces and public facilities, effective pest management depends on a combination of specialist expertise, planning and preventive action.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

For organisations managing large estates and facilities portfolios, mosquito control is most effective when it forms part of a broader Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy. This approach combines inspections, monitoring, data-led risk assessments, treatment programmes and preventive measures to reduce pest-related risks before they escalate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The objective extends beyond pest treatment itself. Effective pest management helps organisations protect people, maintain confidence in the environments they operate, and support uninterrupted learning, working and day-to-day activities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
