For Dione McMaster, becoming a project manager in hard services was a path shaped by opportunity, curiosity, and determination. As we mark\u202f<\/span>International Women in Engineering Day 2025<\/span><\/i><\/a>, Dione\u2019s story is a powerful reminder that engineering is for everyone and that teamwork truly makes the difference.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t always know I wanted to get into engineering,\u201d Dione admits. \u201cAt school, I wasn\u2019t academic and had no clue what I wanted to do. But when a scholarship programme offered the chance to try electrical engineering, I thought \u2014 that\u2019s something different.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That decision set the foundation for Dione\u2019s career. She completed an apprenticeship, worked across various sectors, including commercial maintenance and industrial housing, and steadily progressed into management. Now a project manager with OCS (following its acquisition of FES), Dione reflects on what\u2019s driven her: \u201cI was eager, willing to learn, and willing to take a chance on myself.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

\n

Breaking Barriers and Building Confidence<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Hard services is still a male-dominated space, and Dione acknowledges that standing out as one of the few women came with challenges. \u201cWhen I started, I was introverted. It took time to build confidence, especially when people made comments like, \u2018That\u2019s a man\u2019s job.\u2019 But rather than knock me back, it motivated me. I wanted to prove I could do it just as well as anyone else.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, Dione sees her gender as a strength. \u201cBeing a woman has been one of my biggest assets \u2014 it\u2019s given me that drive to prove myself, not to others, but to meet my own expectations.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

\n

Together We Engineer<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

This year\u2019s International Women in Engineering Day theme,\u202f<\/span>Together We Engineer<\/span><\/i>, resonates deeply with Dione. \u201cYou can\u2019t do this job alone. Engineering and construction are about teamwork. Working together gets things done, and that culture of inclusivity makes the difference.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dione hopes to see more women stepping into engineering roles at all levels. \u201cIt\u2019s already changing, slowly. You see another woman on site, and there\u2019s that instant recognition: \u2018That\u2019s unusual.\u2019 I\u2019d love it to be so normal we don\u2019t look twice.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

Advice to the Next Generation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

For young women considering a career in engineering, Dione\u2019s advice is simple: \u201cGo for it. Take a chance on yourself. Whether you choose an apprenticeship, college or university, engineering opens doors. It\u2019s practical, it\u2019s rewarding, and it gives you skills you can take anywhere in the world.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Her proudest achievement? Becoming one of the first female project managers in her division at a young age. But for Dione, every project brings pride. \u201cSeeing something through from start to finish, knowing what you\u2019ve delivered, that\u2019s what makes it all worthwhile.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

Changing Perceptions\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n

If she could shift one perception about women in engineering? Dione\u2019s answer comes with a smile:\u202f<\/span>\u201cThat we\u2019re just as good as the men \u2014 if not better!\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n
