This <\/span>World Youth Skills Day<\/a>, OCS is celebrating the importance of practical experience and the potential of future talent. In line with the global focus of empowering the young generation, we recently welcomed a group of students for a week-long work experience programme, aimed at building confidence, developing skills and providing real insight into the world of work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hands-on Learning Through Work Experience<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

The students tackled a variety of tasks and challenges throughout the week, gaining valuable, transferable skills. \u201cMy work experience at OCS helped me realise that communication and problem-solving are essential in any job,\u201d said one student. Another student noted how they learned the importance of a strong CV, as well as the value of professional communication. A highlight was presenting their ESG ideas to the team, an opportunity to apply the new skills they had learned. \u201cPresenting to the ESG team made me feel more confident.\u201d. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All three students encouraged others considering work experience to get involved and stay curious. \u201cInvolve yourself in conversations and group work. It helps build your communication skills and confidence, even if it feels outside your comfort zone.\u201d. They emphasised in asking questions and learning from those around them. <\/span><\/p>\n

Apprenticeships Pathways into Work<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

We also recently held our first apprenticeship assessment centre for the 2025 Project Management Apprenticeship programme, following a strong response of over 200 applications for four roles. Led by our Apprenticeship and Funded Learning Engagement Partner, Steph Cox, 16 local candidates were invited to participate in group exercises, individual interviews and a learning-style workshop. The event showcased the enthusiasm and talent of early career applicants and highlighted the need for creating clear pathways into employment.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

\n \u201cWith this assessment centre, we sought to create a positive, supportive environment where young people could be their authentic selves, learn more about how they work best and gain confidence for future opportunities. It wasn\u2019t simply about selecting apprentices. Our goal was for every candidate to leave with something valuable, and I truly believe we achieved that.\u201d <\/p>\n
