A Passion Shaped by a Care for Others<\/h3>\n

Aidan George<\/a> joined OCS in July 2024, as part of the OCS Passenger Services team<\/a> providing assisted travel support across the terminal and airside at Southampton International Airport<\/a>. Before Aviation, he worked in a care home for people with learning disabilities, an experience that continues to shape his approach to his role today.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

\n My passion has always been aviation, and I\u2019ve also always loved talking to people. Growing up, it was just me and my mum, and we travelled whenever we could. I used to spend hours plane spotting, learning where flights were coming from and where they were going. Now I get to work in that environment every day.

Today, working in Aviation brings that early fascination into his everyday life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

By 6\u00a0am, the first wave of passengers\u00a0begin\u00a0to\u00a0flow\u00a0through departures at Southampton Airport. Aidan\u00a0<\/span>prefers early shifts, when\u00a0the environment\u00a0is\u00a0abuzz\u00a0with passengers, excited and keen to embark on their travels.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

\n

Supporting Every Journey<\/h3>\n

Aidan and his\u00a0colleagues\u00a0provide assisted travel support to passengers who need\u00a0additional\u00a0help. Using the airport\u2019s live system, they receive details of arriving and\u00a0departing\u00a0passengers who require\u00a0assistance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Support ranges from physical help, such as wheelchairs, stair climbers, or\u00a0ambilifts, to less visible needs. Some passengers\u00a0require\u00a0reassurance through security. Others\u00a0benefit\u00a0from calm communication, ear defenders, or guidance through busy spaces.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His background in care gave him confidence in supporting people with learning disabilities and complex needs. It also shifted his perspective.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

\n Every day is different. You might be helping someone with reduced mobility, supporting a passenger with complex needs who needs a quieter space, or guiding someone through security who feels overwhelmed. When it gets busy, especially in the summer period, you just focus on what\u2019s in front of you, finish one job properly and then move to the next. We treat everyone with respect and make sure they feel calm and supported.

\r\nWhen someone says thank you, or you can see they\u2019re more relaxed than when you first met them, that\u2019s the best part. <\/p>\n

For many passengers, particularly those who are older or travelling with sensory or cognitive challenges, that support reduces anxiety and restores confidence.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

\n

Working as One Team<\/h3>\n

Operations in Aviation can shift quickly. In peak season, multiple flights may land at once, each with several assisted passengers. With a small team covering the terminal and\u00a0aircraft, coordination is essential.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aidan\u2019s supervisor manages the live schedule,\u00a0allocating\u00a0colleagues to flights and ensuring fair distribution of work. The team communicates constantly, stepping in to support one another when demand increases.\u00a0There are also moments that require professionalism and patience. Occasionally, passengers may request\u00a0assistance\u00a0without a clear need. In those situations, the team upholds a consistent approach.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That approach reflects the culture within OCS Aviation: calm, fair and\u00a0people centred.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

A Future in Aviation<\/h3>\n

For a time, Aidan considered training as a pilot and had begun saving towards it. As his circumstances changed, including marrying last year and buying his first home, he and his wife have made the immediate choice to prioritise the investment in their future together. The dream to train as a pilot\u00a0remains, but for now his focus is on building their life together.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>In five or ten years,\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0love to progress further,\u00a0maybe into\u00a0a more technical or operational role within an airport.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether that progression happens at Southampton or elsewhere, his direction is clear. Aviation is not simply a job. It is a long-term passion.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

\n

Creating Confidence in Busy Spaces<\/h3>\n

Airports are complex, high-pressure environments. Crowds, security processes,\u00a0delays\u00a0and last-minute changes all shape the passenger experience. When flights are delayed or cancelled, Aidan and his colleagues\u00a0remain\u00a0alongside passengers, helping them access refreshments, navigate rebooking\u00a0processes\u00a0or arrange overnight accommodation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The role does not end at the\u00a0aircraft\u00a0door. It is about making sure that every passenger, regardless of need, feels supported from arrival to departure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through colleagues like Aidan, OCS\u00a0Passenger Services\u00a0creates the conditions for safe,\u00a0inclusive\u00a0and confident travel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/section>\n\n\n
