Security is often seen as protection first. Michelle Elmore has spent 42 years proving it is really about people.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Michelle Elmore<\/strong> is an OCS Security Officer at\u00a0<\/span>HM Courts & Tribunal Service<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Birmingham, where she screens and searches everyone coming through the doors, keeps order in a building where emotions often run high, and steps in whenever a situation threatens to turn. It is frontline security work in every sense, keeping colleagues, court staff and the public safe, but what\u00a0makes\u00a0Michelle\u00a0stand\u00a0out\u00a0is the way she does it. Rather than meeting tension with force, she heads off trouble with a conversation, reading people long before a problem becomes an incident. She has been doing it for 42 years and five months, and this September that lifetime of work will be recognised as a finalist for the Frontline Award at the\u00a0<\/span>Women in Security Awards<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>The award recognises women working at the very forefront of the security industry, celebrating those whose contribution, professionalism and impact stand out across frontline roles.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Into the Job on Her Own Merit<\/h3>\n

Security\u00a0runs\u00a0in the family, so it was a world Michelle knew well from the very start.\u00a0\u201cWhat drew me into it was my family background\u201d,\u00a0she says.\u00a0\u201cThe majority of them are in the forces.\u201d\u00a0An uncle who was the chief inspector of North Tyneside wanted her in the police and could easily have opened the door for her, but she was determined to make her own way.\u00a0\u201cI said, to go into that,\u00a0I’ve\u00a0got to do it on my own merit.\u00a0I’m\u00a0not going to do it because of who you are.\u201d\u00a0She started out in 1984 on her own terms, and more than four decades later she has never once regretted it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The years brought promotions, first to supervisor and then to\u00a0manager, before\u00a0she made the kind of decision most people never do and chose to step back down to the floor.\u00a0\u201cI’ve\u00a0been a\u00a0manager,\u00a0I’ve\u00a0been a supervisor. I\u00a0don’t\u00a0want to do that\u00a0anymore. My best job is on the\u00a0frontline,\u00a0meeting\u00a0and greeting members of the public, keeping them calm.\u201d\u00a0That is where she has stayed ever since, closest to the people she came into the job to help.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Skill You Cannot Teach<\/h3>\n

The courts can be a place of real emotion, and on any given day the people arriving include defendants facing serious charges alongside anxious victims, witnesses and worried families, many of whom walk through the doors\u00a0frightened or on edge before the day has even begun. Handling\u00a0all\u00a0these scenarios\u00a0takes far more than a watchful presence at the door, and Michelle’s real gift lies in reading a person and easing the tension before it has a chance to build. Some arrive braced for a fight, and she has long since learned to look past the anger to find the person\u00a0beneath.\u00a0\u201cThe first thing they see is the uniform\u201d,\u00a0she says.\u00a0\u201cThey\u00a0don’t\u00a0see the person beyond that. So first off,\u00a0you’ll\u00a0have a bit of a disagreement.\u201d\u00a0Then, slowly and without ever once raising her voice, she turns it around, and it all rests on a single principle she comes back to\u00a0time and again.\u00a0\u201cYou talk to people the way you want to be spoken to yourself. No other way.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It works because she genuinely means it, and because she meets people exactly where they are.\u00a0\u201cI’m\u00a0a Black Country\u00a0girl, and\u00a0believe it or not, they understand my way of thinking, because I speak like them. If you start talking la-di-da, they\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0going to listen to you.\u201d\u00a0Word of that gift has spread well beyond Birmingham, and court managers across the Midlands now ask for her by name, making her their first call whenever they face a protest or a potentially violent person.<\/span><\/p>\n

When It Matters Most<\/h3>\n

Some days ask far more of Michelle than a difficult conversation ever could. A defendant once began having a panic attack in the building, and the bench sent straight for her, knowing she would handle it with care. She coaxed him out of the courtroom, talked him down gently, and stopped a police officer from handcuffing him because that was simply not what the frightened young man needed. She rang probation, who came down to help, and before long he was on his way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The hardest moments are the ones that stay with her. There was the man she found outside court three in tears, who told her that he wanted to end his life, and she sat with him, patiently taking him through every step of the support process before telling him exactly where to find her if he ever needed to talk. He took her word, and she has seen him around the courts many times since, still here.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then there is the woman she is quite certain she saved.\u00a0\u201cA lady was\u00a0having a seizure on the steps,\u00a0quite aggressively hitting\u00a0her head, and I\u00a0put myself between her and the danger. I\u00a0wouldn’t\u00a0move, because if I did,\u00a0it could have\u00a0been fatal.\u00a0I knew exactly what to\u00a0do, because\u00a0I’m\u00a0epileptic myself.\u201d\u00a0A couple of days later the woman came back into the building and asked to see the lady who had saved her, and it is those quiet returns, Michelle says, that make the whole job worthwhile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

\n \u201cThe most reassuring thing is when they come back and thank me. Being here so long, I’m like their grandparents, if you know what I mean.\u201d <\/p>\n

Bringing Others Through<\/h3>\n

Michelle’s influence reaches well beyond the people who pass through the doors each day, because over the years she has quietly brought on a whole generation of younger officers, several of whom have since moved into senior roles. One of them is Adam Green<\/a>, who started alongside her in the search area and is now a manager, though\u00a0like a true leader,\u00a0she will not take any\u00a0of the credit for it.\u00a0\u201cHe’s gone on now to be a manager. Not through my doings, but his own capability.\u201d\u00a0The lesson she passes on to every new officer never changes;\u00a0listen to people first, always keep your voice down, and never try to shout somebody into agreeing with you.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

\n \u201cStarting in such a demanding environment could have been intimidating for a new officer, but having someone with Michelle\u2019s experience to guide me was invaluable. Her knowledge and professionalism taught me how to manage incidents effectively, engage with people with empathy and understanding, and uphold the policies and procedures we were responsible for enforcing.

None of this, Michelle will happily tell you, has ever been about advancement or applause, which is precisely why her nomination feels so fitting. Put forward by\u00a0<\/span>Judge Mark Aspinall<\/span><\/b>, who spent 17 years at Birmingham courts and saw her work first-hand, the nomination recognises not just the length of Michelle\u2019s service, but the quiet consistency,\u00a0care\u00a0and judgement she brings to the frontline every day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Michelle, being named a finalist for the Frontline Award at the Women in Security Awards is a moment of pride, but one she instinctively shares with others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n\n\n
