Sian Walker, Legal Counsel, has been named the Month 2 Innovation Station winner for June after putting forward an idea to help colleagues access practical AI learning.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Innovation Station gives colleagues across every role and area of the business a platform to share ideas that could improve how we work, with winning ideas helping turn great suggestions into practical change.<\/p>\n

Sian<\/a> joined OCS in March as part of the Legal team based at the Ipswich HQ, bringing a background in private practice law into her first in-house legal role. Within a few months, she identified an opportunity to help colleagues build their understanding of a technology that is becoming increasingly relevant across the business.<\/p>\n

Her idea was straightforward: encourage colleagues to use free, Government-backed AI learning<\/a> so they can develop their skills at their own pace and consider how AI could support their roles.<\/p>\n

Following Sian\u2019s suggestion, the Learning and Development Team<\/a> is making AI Skills Boost courses available through the OCS LEAP Academy, giving colleagues easy access to learning and development opportunities, whatever their role or location.<\/p>\n

A Different Way of Thinking About AI<\/h3>\n

Sian\u2019s idea grew from her experience of moving from private practice into a commercial business.<\/p>\n

AI had largely been something she used in her personal life. In her previous role, all AI usage was forbidden. Joining OCS meant adapting to a different environment, where technology and new ways of working are increasingly part of the conversation.<\/p>\n

\u201cComing into a very fast-paced, commercially driven business that embraces change and the challenges that come with it, using AI certainly felt like a big step change for me,\u201d Sian says. She began exploring AI independently, using online resources to understand how it could be applied at work. That led her to the range of free learning available through the Government-backed AI Skills Boost platform.<\/p>\n

The range caught her attention.<\/p>\n

Courses are available for people who are new to AI, including learning on prompts and AI agents. Other courses are linked to specific areas of work, including project management, <\/strong>procurement, supply chain management and business systems.<\/p>\n

That breadth means colleagues can explore learning relevant to their roles and level of experience.<\/p>\n

AI is Already Part of Everyday Life<\/h3>\n

Sian\u2019s interest in AI extends beyond her role at OCS. She is also seeing how naturally the technology is becoming part of everyday life for the next generation.<\/p>\n

Her 10-year-old son has already started experimenting with AI himself. He used ChatGPT to learn how to make a fly trap before heading into the shed to put his idea into practice.<\/p>\n

It made her smile. It also showed her how quickly AI is becoming part of the way younger generations learn and solve problems.<\/p>\n

Sian has seen a similar shift with her mum, who was initially new to AI before taking part in a training course. She came away with a newfound enthusiasm for embracing it in everyday life.<\/p>\n

These experiences have reinforced Sian\u2019s view that understanding AI matters. As the technology becomes more familiar in homes, education and workplaces, people need to understand how to use it well and where human judgement remains essential.<\/p>\n

Accessible training is one way to start.<\/p>\n

Making AI More Accessible<\/h3>\n

Sian\u2019s own experience has shown her that there can be a learning curve. She also recognises that AI needs to be approached carefully when it is used to support communications, negotiations or other work where accuracy matters.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople need to make sure that they\u2019re checking, make sure that it is saying what we intended to say,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n

AI can provide a useful starting point. Colleagues remain responsible for reviewing the output and applying their own judgement before using it.<\/p>\n

That human oversight matters particularly in work where communication, relationships and professional expertise are central.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere needs to be training and a word of caution,\u201d Sian says.<\/p>\n

Learning That Can Support Different Roles<\/h3>\n

Sian identified introductory Microsoft courses as a useful starting point for colleagues who are less familiar with AI. She also found learning linked to Dynamics, Salesforce, procurement and project management, which could be relevant to specific teams.<\/p>\n

Managers and teams can explore the available courses and identify learning that supports the work they do.<\/p>\n

Within Legal, AI is already developing through the work of colleagues such as Ben Perkins<\/strong>, Legal Contacts Manager,<\/strong> whom Sian describes as highly knowledgeable and proactive in incorporating AI into everyday work life.<\/p>\n

Her focus is broader: making sure colleagues across OCS know that accessible AI learning is available to them.<\/p>\n

An Idea That Started With a New Colleague<\/h3>\n

Sian was surprised to be selected as the Innovation Station winner.<\/p>\n

Being relatively new to the Facilities Management<\/a> sector. Her experience shows how ideas can come from colleagues at any stage of their OCS career.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think also with colleagues being encouraged to submit their ideas, it makes them actually look at their role and think, okay, how can things improve and how can I help the business?\u201d Sian says.<\/p>\n

She believes having a route to put forward ideas can also help colleagues feel that their contribution matters.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/section>\n\n\n

That is the purpose behind Innovation Station: giving colleagues a route to share ideas and improve how we work. Driving positive experiences for not only each other, but the communities where we work and the customers, we work alongside.<\/p>\n

Turning a Suggestion Into Action<\/h3>\n

For Sian, the outcome matters more than the recognition. What began as a simple observation about AI’s growing role has become something colleagues across OCS can act on, whatever their team or level of experience.<\/p>\n

It is a reminder that good ideas do not need to be complicated to make a difference. And that they can come from anyone, at any stage of their OCS career.<\/p>\n
