Seeds and fruit from trees are often discarded as waste. But in the hands of someone with a clear vision like Abdul, these overlooked items have become a source of environmental change in the manufacturing area.
Abdul’s green initiative, planting trees for the future
Abdul is a supervisor at a customer’s manufacturing site managed by OCS Indonesia in Sukabumi, West Java. He has led a team of cleaners and gardeners ensuring efficient operations for nearly three years, while also promoting sustainable practices.
Beyond his day-to-day responsibilities of scheduling and team management, Abdul also takes small yet impactful actions. Instead of sweeping away the vast quantities of fruit waste and teak seedlings scattered around the factory, Abdul saw the potential to nurture the seedlings and make the factory area greener.
Abdul’s environmental awareness and initiative is the driving force behind his green actions to cultivate teak tree saplings, and he has planted around 500 saplings since August 2024. He began his journey to give back to nature in a sustainable and lasting way in the highlands, where the air is cool and the soil fertile.
“The saplings are easy to look after. By the time the trees reach three years old, they can be harvested, and their wood becomes even more valuable at around 15 years,” said Abdul.
“These trees provide many environmental benefits. They can help prevent landslides, as the roots strengthen the soil in areas prone to erosion. They also absorb and store water, reducing the risk of floods.”

Let’s start, don’t wait!
Abdul’s consistent efforts truly deserve recognition. He sets the example that caring for the environment, when started from within, can lead to meaningful impact for a greener future.
At OCS Indonesia, we value small but consistent steps towards sustainability. That is why we chose Abdul as one of the winners of the TRUE Star Programme in April in the Respect category.
“Don’t’ wait! Let’s start. Each of us can plant a sapling. We shouldn’t depend on others, we should be a part of the solution by taking action ourselves.”
Today, the teak saplings Abdul planted have grown into young trees, standing about two metres tall. As well as bringing greenery to the manufacturing area, his efforts also support our customer’s CSR activities in a number of regions, particularly in the environmental sector.
Abdul is grateful for the encouragement he has received from both customers and the operational team. Since joining OCS, he gained valuable knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on training, which he applies in his daily work.
Looking ahead, Abdul hopes to inspire others with the same environmental spirit—starting with his team and extending to the wider community.
“I believe we can contribute to protecting the environment for the future. Cutting down a tree is easy but planting one takes years of care and patience. It may be a long journey, but it’s something we must do to preserve our planet.”
