Cultivating a Green Culture: Nuryana’s Initiative for the Community

At an automotive manufacturing site, landscaping helps create a more pleasant and welcoming environment with ornamental plants. When the nursery is also used to grow tomatoes and chillies, it has an even greater impact. This is the story of our gardener, Nuryana.

Starting with seedlings from his family, he has shared knowledge, inspired others to start planting at home, and fostered unity among our teams, our customer, and the local community.

Planting small seeds for bigger impact

For nearly three years, Nuryana has been overseeing plant nurseries as part of his daily responsibilities. He also takes care of various ornamental plants until they are ready for distribution across the facility.

Maintaining healthy soil is essential to his work. He keeps the nursery soil loose and fertile to support strong plant growth. From this routine, he came up with an initiative to grow food crops that many people could enjoy. Helped by his colleagues, Nuryana brought tomato and chilli seedlings from home and began cultivating them in the nursery.

“Since joining OCS, I’ve become more aware of the value of plants. It’s rewarding to grow something yourself and share the harvest with others.”

The results were positive. From around 20 plants, each yielded between one and two kilograms of fresh produced to be shared.

Inspiring community through practical gardening tips

This success motivated Nuryana to demonstrate that growing food can be simple. Even with limited space, anyone can start at home. After sharing the harvest with customers and colleagues, he extended his reach to small food stalls near the customer site by bringing tomatoes, chillies, seedlings, and practical advice.

Nuryana hopes these small gestures will inspire others to start planting at home.

“When food prices rise, planting our own can make a positive difference. I want more people to see that their garden can provide food and nutrition for their families.”

Growing together for a greener community

A modest nursery initiative has led to bigger gains for the community. The harvest may be small now, but the values behind it are far greater as Nuryana promotes unity, self-reliance, and a greener environment.

His efforts support greener workplace while encouraging households to save money through urban gardening. This initiative also embodies the OCS Unity value, which encourages colleagues to work together, support communities, and create positive impact beyond the workplace.

For his dedication, Nuryana received recognition through the OCS Indonesia True Star Programme in the Unity category. He remains committed to developing his skills and caring for the environment around him.

“Small actions can create a big impact when we stay committed. There is no instant success. Everything begins with small steps.”
