Harun’s Story of Courage and Care

A strong sense of responsibility is essential in daily work, and it becomes even more critical in times of crisis. This principle guides Harun Affan Syahari, one of our dedicated cleaners at an automotive facility. His quick thinking and courage during an unexpected incident helped keep our customer’s facility safe and running smoothly.

The Courage to Act

Harun’s bravery prevented what could have been a devastating fire at a facility managed by OCS Indonesia. His actions protected the premises and nearby buildings, potentially saved lives, and minimised disruption to operations. His story has since inspired colleagues, highlighting the importance of responsibility and timely decision-making.

It happened late at night. The workshop had already closed, and the area was quiet. Harun, having just completed his shift, was outside the workshop fixing his motorbike, which had a mechanical issue.

That was when he and his colleague noticed something unusual—a faint but distinct smell, similar from to welding fumes. But no such work was happening nearby. Harun returned to the facility to investigate and discovered something alarming: flames on the roof near the second floor, in the area where the LED lighting renovations had recently been taking place.

Though panic set in briefly, Harun acted quickly. Drawing on the basic Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) training he had received, he grabbed a fire extinguisher and rushed towards the flames. Within two minutes, he had put out the fire.

“The fire has already spread, even reaching towards the next building. I panicked for a moment, but thankfully the fire extinguishers were working, and we were alert. Because of the basic training I’d received, I knew exactly what to do.”

Small Actions, Big Impact

Harun’s role as a cleaner goes far beyond keeping things tidy. His daily tasks include sweeping, dusting, mopping, and glass cleaning to ensure every area remains spotless. From the workshop and mechanics’ lockers to the pantry, display area, and café on the second floor, he maintains the facility with care and attention.

Born in 1991, Harun has worked in the housekeeping industry since 2010, with a background in hospitality. For him, the job is not only about cleanliness, but also about creating a welcoming atmosphere and supporting OCS’s mission of making people and places the best they can be.

“My colleagues and I at OCS Indonesia are committed to serving visitors with kindness and positivity. We try to be helpful and knowledgeable, so when visitors ask questions about the facility, we can give clear answers and help them feel more connected to the space we manage,” Harun explains.

This mindset of care and personal growth has helped Harun thrive in his role. His dedication did not go unnoticed. In January 2025, he was recognised as one of the TRUE Star winners. Just a few months later, he was honoured with the MD Award in the Empowerment category OCS Indonesia’s award ceremony attended by the OCS Group and APAC & ME ExCom members.

“I’m so happy! After all these years in housekeeping, this is the first time I’ve received such an award. I’m proud and hope my story inspires my colleagues and others too.”

To Harun, loving his job brings peace of mind. He lives by the motto: “Be a good and useful person to those around you.” He treats his workspace as a second home, caring for it wholeheartedly. When crisis struck, he stood up and took action, without hesitation.
