Sumanta’s Initiative: Creating Comfort Beyond the Daily Job

An underused office area gave Sumanta an opportunity to improve the workplace. He realised that caring for the space would help prevent pests and create a more comfortable environment for people working nearby.

As a pest control colleague, Sumanta closely monitors his surroundings to protect the workplace from pests and disease risks. His awareness inspired him to go beyond his usual duties. Seeing potential in the area behind the office, he proposed turning it into a comfortable outdoor rest space for OCS Indonesia colleagues and customers.

Recognising potential through careful observation

For more than ten years, Sumanta has helped maintain a safe working environment at a power plant in West Java. He sprays insecticide daily to control mosquitoes and sometimes faces unexpected hazards, including snakes and lizards that can create biological risks in the workplace.

His role has taught him to observe the workplace carefully, identifying emerging risks and take early action.

This mindset encouraged him to look more closely at the area behind the office. He saw that improving it would support pest prevention and create a more pleasant space for workers. Sumanta recognised turned that insight into an opportunity to give the space a new purpose.

Creating a comfortable space from an underused corner

Sumanta proposed an outdoor rest area for OCS Indonesia colleagues and customers, giving workers a cooler and more comfortable alternative to the container they usually use during breaks.

With his supervisor’s approval, he cleaned and reorganised the space. Working with the customer, he reuses leftover construction materials, including sand and cement to develop it into a dedicated green area.

“We were confident in our plan. By the time we shared the idea, we knew how to deliver it while continuing to fulfil our main responsibilities.”

Sumanta added ornamental plants and shaped them into a natural gateway that provided more shade. His colleagues contributed handmade tables and benches, making the area even more comfortable.

Together, they transformed an underused corner into a greener, more welcoming space. Colleagues now use it for morning briefings, informal conversations and short breaks.

Shared comfort for colleagues

Sumanta hoped the space would give people somewhere comfortable to recharge before returning to work with renewed energy.

“Everyone can enjoy the space. When colleagues feel refreshed, they can give their best at work.”

The OCS Indonesia TRUE Star programme recognised his initiative in the Respect category. The award celebrated Sumanta’s care, effort and willingness to contribute beyond his daily responsibilities.

Sumanta believes Respect means spotting opportunities to improve workplace and acting quickly to make others more comfortable. By managing pest risks and creating a simple outdoor rest area, he demonstrates how a positive attitude can benefit everyone.
