Seeing What Others Overlook: How Ardi Puts Respect into Action at Work

A pile of discarded wood might look like waste. For Ardiansyah, it became an opportunity to solve a problem.

At one of OCS Indonesia’s power plant customer sites in Central Java, several Health and Safety information boards were sitting unused in a warehouse. The boards were ready to be displayed, but the customer’s HSE team had been struggling to install them.

Ardi noticed the problem and offered to help.

Adapting to the needs of the workplace

Ardi works as a General Service colleague, moving between areas of the site to support daily operations and customer requests. Working across the site has given him a good understanding of how different areas operate, as well as the challenges that can arise in day-to-day work.

It has also taught him to pay attention to what is happening around him.

When Ardi saw the unused safety boards, he looked for a practical way to get them installed.

The site had a number of wooden pallets left over from machinery deliveries. Some were still in good condition, so Ardi saw an opportunity to reuse the wood to make frames for the boards.

With his colleagues, he selected suitable pieces, measured them to fit the boards and assembled the frames using a drill. His experience making wooden equipment at home also come in handy.

Together, they made six frames, which the HSE team placed at strategic locations around the site. The safety messages could now be displayed where people could easily see them, while the unused pallet wood had been given a practical purpose.

Care as the foundation of respect

Ardi’s initiative earned him recognition in the Respect category of OCS Indonesia’s TRUE Star Programme. He had previously received the Empowerment category for creating a precast U-Ditch bridge that made access to the garden area safer for workers.

For Ardi, Respect goes beyond how we treat other people. It also means paying attention to what is happening around us, caring about safety, and taking action when we can help.

That mindset shapes how Ardi approaches his work. When he notices something that needs attention, he looks at what he can do with the resources around him and work with his colleagues to find a practical solution.
