Supporting a 5-Star Learning Environment: OCS Indonesia Partners with British School Jakarta

Every morning, as students and teachers step onto the campus of the British School Jakarta (BSJ), they enter spaces that are carefully maintained to feel both welcoming and safe. This environment is vital for an effective educational experience – one where students can focus on learning, and teachers can provide guidance in the best settings.

At OCS Indonesia, we’re proud to work with BSJ to bring our facilities management solutions to this lively, diverse school environment. To understand what it takes to create such a space, we talked with Chris Gunn, BSJ’s Head of Campus Facilities & Services, who shared the challenges and goals of campus operations.

The BSJ campus covers over 18 hectares and includes a variety of spaces: classrooms, science labs, sports fields, cafeterias, and play areas. “Unlike a single building or office, our campus has nearly 30 buildings, each with its own needs,” Chris explains.

“We aim for a ‘5-star experience,’ where the look and cleanliness of every space contribute to a positive daily experience for students, staff and visitors.”

Keeping the campus clean and appealing has always been a priority, but these standards became even more essential post-COVID. “We’ve always been serious about sanitation,” Chris says. “COVID just emphasised how important it is to clean high-touch areas daily. Door handles, cafeteria counters, and classrooms are sanitised regularly, especially since younger kids might not be as hygiene-conscious.”

BSJ’s green spaces bring an extra layer of work for the facilities team. “With our green areas, we have to deal with dust, insects, and muddy spots after rain, which inevitably get tracked indoors,” Chris notes. “Frequent cleaning and upkeep are crucial, especially in busy areas.”

Flexibility is key for the team, given the wide range of activities on campus. “You might walk into a kindergarten room and find a big pile of sand from a creative activity. It’s up to us to clean it up and have the space ready for another day of learning,” Chris says.
