Executive Summary

RMF Health, a partnership between OCS (formerly FES FM and Support Services) and Robertson Construction, successfully completed a £2.5 million redevelopment project for Ward 20 at St John’s Hospital in Livingston. The project, delivered in collaboration with NHS Lothian, aimed to enhance the hospital’s capacity and improve care facilities, particularly for patients undergoing eye and hand trauma procedures. As the regional hand trauma unit for the Lothian area, St John’s Hospital plays a crucial role in the referral and treatment of patients requiring specialised care. The redevelopment focused on expanding and improving the surgical and post-operative spaces to support this vital service.

The Brief

The project aimed to:

Expand surgical and post-operative capacity.
Enhance facilities for eye and hand trauma patients.
Reduce waiting times for hand trauma procedures.
Improve patient recovery spaces and flow through the hospital.

The Outcome

The addition of the new surgical theatre and the enhanced day surgery unit directly addresses the growing demand for hand trauma surgeries in the region. The expanded facilities will enable more procedures to be performed each week, thereby improving patient outcomes by offering quicker access to treatment. Additionally, the enhanced post-operative care facilities will support patients throughout their recovery, ensuring that they receive the best possible care during their stay.

BEST Outcomes

  • We created a patient-first environment by designing spaces with comfort, privacy and recovery in mind. Collaboration with NHS staff ensured the upgrades directly responded to user needs.
  • The reconfiguration of Ward 20 allows more procedures to be completed each week, easing pressure on the system and enabling better use of staff time and hospital resources.
  • Delivered with minimal disruption to hospital operations, the project followed healthcare construction best practices, including infection control, stakeholder engagement and phased delivery.
  • By increasing the number of theatres and improving infrastructure, we’ve future-proofed the hospital’s surgical capacity to meet growing regional demand.
  • The new theatre capacity supports faster treatment and better recovery for patients, contributing to shorter hospital stays and improved clinical outcomes.
