As part of our social value commitments, we’ve outlined a roadmap of activities to ensure the empowerment and preservation of the environments and communities we work in. One of our latest such initiatives is the launch of a business management apprenticeship programme as an alternative to higher education, where apprentices can earn as they learn. In September, we were delighted to welcome four new apprentices to our thousand-strong apprentice cohort: Flynn, Bobby, Rafael and Jacob. The four apprentices will embark on an 18-month programme that will see them learn the ropes of the facilities management industry with bi-monthly department rotations to give them a comprehensive understanding of how businesses operate.
To mark the launch, we sat down with the apprentices to learn about their experiences so far and their hopes for the programme. Today, we’d like to introduce you to Flynn:
How would you describe your first impressions of OCS?
Extremely positive. The working atmosphere is friendly and accommodating. I quickly realised that OCS is keen to provide any resources and equipment that I need. The people at OCS are not only supportive but driven too.
What were you doing before you joined OCS?
I was doing A levels at Suffolk One, studying business, politics, and geography.
What department are you stationed at to start with?
I am starting in PEST, looking at the management and operational side of the business.
How are you finding it so far?
I really am enjoying most aspects of the apprenticeship so far. Initially, I was apprehensive and unsure about future rotations within the role. However, these apprehensions were quickly resolved. I have thoroughly enjoyed being in the office atmosphere and learning about the different areas and roles within the business. This allowed me to channel my goals more effectively.
Is there anything you’ve been shocked/surprised to learn about? If so, what?
The size of the business, not only regarding customer base but also the personnel!
What are your main responsibilities in your department?
I have created standard operating procedures for use with Service Tracker, a platform that PEST utilises to manage jobs, contracts and invoices.
What are your impressions of your colleagues and the team you’ve been assigned?
I have really enjoyed working with different people, from technicians in the field to managers in the boardroom. The knowledge and dedication of my colleagues are outstanding
What are you hoping to get out of the apprenticeship?
I hope to gain valuable knowledge and skills while immersing myself in an active business environment.
Do you have any career aspirations? If so, please share
I aspire to become a successful leader within a business, driving growth and developing business models.
Summarise your first few weeks at OCS in three words.
Welcoming, fast-paced, invaluable.
