June is retiring after more than three decades supporting customers across Harwich International, forming part of our valued Essex Police contract. Her story reflects the dedication and kindness that sit at the heart of OCS TRUE Values. She first joined the team in 1989, travelling between the port and nearby facilities, often covering more than one site each day. Over the years, she worked through seven different cleaning providers before joining OCS, remaining a steady and reassuring presence for everyone around her.
June supported teams across policing and immigration environments, where consistency, discretion and respect matter every day. She worked through busy passenger seasons, the rise and fall of major ferry routes and the changing demands of the port. She has seen colleagues come and go, brand new ships arrive, and long-standing routines settle into place. Through all of this, she remained known for her reliability and her calm approach.
Tradition
Much the same as OCS founder, Frederick William Goodliffe, who started the business in 1900 with just one part-time employee, a ladder, a pail, and a pushcart. June prides herself on still using traditional cleaning methods. ‘AI’ and Robots may have a rapidly growing presence within the FM industry; however, sometimes a conventional “mop and bucket” is what is really needed.
A reliable presence through the pandemic
During the pandemic, when many parts of the country slowed down, June continued to clean and disinfect each day to help maintain safe working conditions. Her effort contributed to business continuity for the policing teams who remained operational throughout that period. She received additional leave in recognition of her commitment, although she says it was simply her job and she was glad to support others.
Retirement
Outside of work, June has always kept an active life, from riding motorbikes as a teenager to walking her beloved spaniel every day. She has four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a close community around her, including the “Honeysuckle” club she attends each Friday, which provides a welcoming environment to enjoy time to socialise with friends over a cup of tea and even the odd game of Bingo! Retirement will give her more time for family, local activities and the freedom to enjoy slow mornings and longer walks with her dog, with the support of close friends.
Turning 82 this year, June felt it was the right moment to take a well-earned rest. “I want to be able to still walk out the door and say my goodbyes”, she says about her decision to retire. The teams at Essex Police will miss her experience and her steady presence, as she leaves with their heartfelt thanks and genuine appreciation for her unwavering dedication across the 37 years.
OCS is grateful for colleagues like June, whose dedication helps make people and places the best they can be.
“It’s truly wonderful to have people like June working in our business. She is an exceptional individual who has dedicated 37 years to delivering a first-class service to Essex Police. We are incredibly fortunate to have had her as part of our OCS team.
June, thank you for your unwavering commitment, hard work and loyalty throughout the many years you’ve spent with us. I wish you all the very best in your retirement and hope you enjoy every moment of the future that lies ahead of you”.
