As part of the UK’s wider digital transformation, in January 2027, the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) will be switched off and all services relying on the analogue network will become inoperable. Among them is trusted security communications provider BT Redcare, which is being closed in August 2025 as part of BT’s move to a digital-first infrastructure.
Businesses that rely on BT Redcare face substantial risks of disruption to their security monitoring systems. In fact, it is estimated that up to 120,000 customers across the country will be impacted by the closure.
Andrew Campbell, our Security Systems Director, shares his advice to Professional Security Magazine for businesses navigating the switch-off. Key takeaways include:
Deploy a phased approach to minimise disruption
Given the implications of the PSTN switch-off, transitioning to new digital networks is non-negotiable. Minimising operational downtime is key to ensuring business continuity and a phased approach. This involves deploying new systems side-by-side with feature flagging to minimise disruption, which can help protect businesses against any threat of data corruption.
Adopt bespoke solutions
As businesses continue to migrate away from the PSTN, it’s important that they ensure they choose a solution that not only matches the functionality of BT Redcare but also offers scalability and future-proofing benefits. This can include IP-based alarm monitoring, which delivers faster communication, or enhanced security features such as real-time alerts, end-to-end encryption and cloud storage options.
Enlist specialist support
Given the breadth of alternative solutions available, for businesses transitioning away from BT Redcare, it’s important they work closely with trusted facilities management providers to help them safely navigate the switch-off.
