Apprenticeships reflect our TRUE Values in action

As part of the OCS family, 1M is backing the next generation of skilled tradespeople through its growing apprenticeship programme — creating career opportunities for Aotearoa’s workforce while delivering the consistent, high-quality service our customers count on.

With 12 apprentices currently in training across mechanical building services, HVAC and refrigeration, the programme reflects our shared commitment to investing in people and doing business the right way. Apprentices learn on the job, gaining hands-on experience alongside qualified colleagues, while progressing through structured, accredited training delivered by Competenz.

“We’re not just filling roles — we’re building people up,” says Operations Service Manager Narvin Permal. “Our apprentices are trained in our systems, on live customer sites, which means they develop the technical and professional skills we need to deliver trusted service.”

These apprenticeships are a practical expression of our TRUE Values.

  • Trust: Apprentices are trained to the highest quality and safety standards from day one.
  • Respect: The programme supports career development for people from all walks of life — from school-leavers to career-changers.
  • Unity: Learning happens as part of a wider team, where everyone’s contribution is valued.
  • Empowerment: Apprentices are given the tools, support and real-world experience to build successful careers.

Albert Khou, nearing completion of his apprenticeship, says the opportunity has helped him grow professionally and personally.

“Before starting, I had no experience and not much confidence. Now I’ve built strong technical and communication skills and feel ready to take the next step.”

Third-year apprentice Akashdeep Singh adds, “Every day is different, and the senior technicians are generous with their time and knowledge. It’s made a huge difference.”

The current cohort includes two adult apprentices who have retrained from other industries — a reflection of the inclusive, future-focused culture that 1M and OCS share.

“People who’ve worked elsewhere bring maturity, motivation and transferable skills,” says Contracts Manager Byron Keppler. “That kind of diversity strengthens our business.”

While all current apprentices are male, work is underway to encourage more women into technical roles — part of our broader effort to create an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive.

This is one of the many ways we’re helping make people and places the best they can be — for our colleagues, customers, and communities.
