OCS believe it’s important that all colleagues have an opportunity to contribute and celebrate our diverse and inclusive culture. During 2023 our branches and national support office hosted opportunities for colleagues to participate in several cultural celebrations, including Matariki, Māori Language Week and Diwali.
Matariki: Weaving Traditions
During the Matariki festivities, OCS team membershad the opportunity to learn the art of harakeke tatangi (flax weaving) and came together for a shared lunch featuring traditional Māori kai including ‘boil up’ (a hearty broth of meat, bones and greens) and parāoa parai (fried bread).
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori: Embracing the Māori Language
In honour of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week), a variety of resources were shared with our teams across Aotearoa New Zealand to encourage learning and speaking te reo Māori. We used the occasion, following the launch of Whiri te Tangita, our new cultural capability strategy, to also announce our ‘Te Kākano wānanga (workshop)’.
The wānanga aimed to introduce and enhance our wider team’s knowledge, confidence and connection with Te Ao Māori and Te Tiriti principles in our day-to-day mahi (work) and the positive feedback received underscored the wānanga’s impact.
Diwali: A Festival of Lights
Diwali, also known as Dipawali, took center stage as OCS celebrated the rich cultural heritage of our many Indian colleagues. The festival, India’s biggest and most significant holiday, unfolded with vibrant colors, delectable cuisine, and traditional attire. Team members gathered to learn about the significance of Diwali, savor mouthwatering Indian food, and don traditional clothing.
While small, these celebrations play a crucial role in fostering inclusivity, raising cultural awareness promoting mutual respect, and encouraging engagement. They contribute to a positive work environment where everyone feels supported, celebrated and recognised.
