Women remain underrepresented in engineering, and more so in the operational roles that keep facilities running. Jen Mayor, Professional Mechanical Engineer and Account Manager at OCS Philippines, is part of a growing group reshaping that picture.
Her remit covers equipment performance, multi-site operations and the daily decisions that shape the customer experience. Jen’s route into the profession reflects technical discipline, continuous learning, and the Filipino value of diskarte, a resourcefulness that turns constraint into opportunity, in a field where women in engineering are still the exception.
How did your journey in engineering begin, and what shaped your decision to pursue it?
“My journey into engineering was not a conventional one, as it was not initially my first choice of study.”
What began with uncertainty gradually turned into purpose.
“I discovered a genuine interest in the field. I became fascinated by problem-solving, innovation, and the opportunity to contribute to projects that create real-world impact.”
Early in her journey, she found herself in a male-dominated environment.
“At first, it felt intimidating,” she shares, but those experiences pushed her forward. “Those experiences motivated me to challenge my own doubts and prove that women are equally capable of succeeding in technical and engineering fields.”
What was your early experience in operations, and what challenges did you face?
“My first experience working on-site was both rewarding and transformative. It allowed me to bridge the gap between theory and practice. The environment was fast-paced and demanding, requiring adaptability, collaboration, and strong technical judgment.”
Working in facilities management meant facing constant challenges.
“Challenges can range from equipment failures and technical concerns to tight deadlines, safety requirements, and coordinating with various teams,” she explains.
Rather than being discouraged, she leaned into growth.
“I used it as motivation to work harder, continuously improve myself, and build confidence in my abilities.”
How did you grow in your career and establish credibility in a male-dominated field?
“There have been moments throughout my career when I felt the need to prove my capabilities. I focused on developing my technical expertise, expanding my knowledge, and consistently delivering quality work,” she shares.
Her commitment to continuous learning and professional growth became a defining factor.
“One of my proudest achievements was advancing my credentials from a Licensed Mechanical Engineer to a Professional Mechanical Engineer (PME).”
What does your role look like today, and how do you manage operations and customer expectations?
“My role focuses on the overall performance of all equipment operations and the end-to-end management of multiple facilities.”
Her responsibilities go beyond technical oversight.
“My day typically starts early, checking system alerts and operational updates from all sites to immediately identify any issues,” she explains. “Every decision we make ultimately impacts the client experience,” she adds, highlighting the importance of reliability and responsiveness.
How do you handle high-pressure situations while maintaining trust with customers?
“Some of the most challenging situations I have encountered involved managing critical operational issues and making decisions under pressure.”
Her approach is grounded in focus and collaboration.
“I overcame these challenges by remaining focused, relying on my technical knowledge, and collaborating effectively with my team. Engineering and facilities management are not only about technical solutions, but also about communication and relationship-building,” she shares.
What impact does your work have on customers and facilities?
“One of the most fulfilling aspects of my role is seeing how our work directly affects clients and facility users.”
She recalls situations where quick action made a difference.
“Through immediate coordination, quick assessment, and clear communication, we were able to restore normal operations with minimal downtime. A strong client connection is built on transparency, reliability, and responsiveness, especially during critical situations.”
How important are teamwork and bayanihan in delivering results?
“No matter how skilled an individual may be, successful outcomes are achieved through collaboration, trust, and mutual support. I believe that the Filipino value of bayanihan is especially important in the workplace because it fosters unity, respect, and a shared sense of responsibility. When people work together and uplift one another, everyone has the opportunity to contribute, learn, and excel.”
How has OCS Philippines supported your growth and development?
“OCS Philippines has played a significant role in my professional growth. It has provided opportunities to develop my technical expertise, leadership skills, and operational experience,” she shares.
More importantly, it has enabled her to lead with confidence.
“It has provided a platform where I can contribute meaningfully, grow professionally, and demonstrate that women can thrive and lead in technical and operational roles.”
What advice would you give to young Filipinas and what should people understand about women in engineering?
“Do not be discouraged by the perception that engineering is difficult or male-dominated.”
Jen encourages women to pursue engineering with confidence and determination.
“This field is not defined by gender, but by capability, discipline, and commitment to growth. We are not only responsible for technical execution, but also for building and maintaining strong client relationships. We are not limited to behind-the-scenes work. Women are leaders who represent our teams and build trust with clients.”
