Tell us about yourself, your role and your journey at OCS
I have been working at OCS for 8 years in total. Throughout those years, I progressed in various roles. I began as a customer service advisor, moved into an Accounts Payable (AP) assistant role and then into a senior role towards the end of the 2 years. I was happy with my progress and wanted to continue within the department. In my 4th year, I stepped into an Accounts Payable supervisor position, and in my 6th year, I got promoted to an Accounts Payable Team Leader.
What attracted you to OCS, over other companies?
Originally working in hospitality, I discovered OCS (known as Servest at the time) through a job fair. The company was recruiting for a new customer service help desk. I got the job and worked in the role for 2 years. What attracted me to OCS was how family-friendly the company is. As a working parent, I needed a flexible schedule and this job allowed me to work from home, accommodating my child’s school hours. That flexibility was something different that what other companies offered and I was really grateful to have it.
What key milestones or achievements have you accomplished during your time here?
One of my key achievements is receiving the TRUE Star Award in November for assisting with the relocation interviews of our colleagues from the Bury to Ipswich office. Working alongside Aston Hunter, our Financial Controller, I conducted 40 different interviews. I also took over the hard services side of AP, covering both hard and soft services, which broadened my scope of responsibility.
What specific skills have you developed since joining and how have they contributed to your career growth?
In my diverse set of roles, I have developed my people skills. Communication and networking have been crucial to my development at OCS. Additionally, I have gained system skills, including proficiency in finance packages, Access Dimensions and Microsoft Dynamics. I learned all of these skills on the job, and they have been highly beneficial since.
How has OCS supported your professional development and career aspirations?
As someone who started in the hospitality industry, finance was completely new to me. However, the AP team offered me a full-time position that fit perfectly with my personal life. After 6 months of working at the company, I never looked back. Another aspect that supported my professional development is the people at OCS. My colleagues have played a significant role in my growth. For example, many people within the AP team have taken AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) and are highly knowledgeable in their areas of expertise. They are extremely willing to help and support others in need. It’s that team spirit that brings individuals together.
Can you provide examples of how mentorship or support from colleagues has impacted your career?
Through overseeing the system hive-up and recruiting a full team, I have met many different people across the company in numerous projects. This allowed me to network along the way and ultimately build my confidence.
What aspects of OCS’s work environment and culture would you highlight to attract new graduates?
The flexible working arrangements make it much easier for working parents. OCS has a good understanding of personal situations. This is quite a good motivator, as I am happy to give back to the company – it’s like a mutual exchange. The people are what makes OCS special. Everyone is friendly and sympathetic to one another.
What advice would you give to those who are considering joining OCS?
I encourage you to take the chance. You never know if you will end up discovering what you truly enjoy. OCS offers a variety of departments including IT, procurement, finance HR, marketing…the list goes on! With all the different areas, there is always something tailored to you and your interests. Taking this chance will open endless opportunities you may not be aware of.
What has been your favourite moment working at OCS?
It’s not necessarily one favourite moment but rather a collection of experiences over time. Meeting the people I have worked with here has been the highlight. They have created such a warm and welcoming work environment. For instance, if you encounter an issue in your personal life, people will be willing to listen and assist. The level of care the team has makes working at OCS so enjoyable. Additionally, I feel proud of my progression and self-growth. Before joining, I was quite shy. However, through the various roles I’ve been in, meeting individuals from different backgrounds, and with the supportive company culture, I’ve come out of my shell.
