Executive Summary

OCS partnered with Scottish Autism to refurbish the sensory room at New Struan School. This initiative aimed to enhance the learning experience for autistic children by providing a calming and engaging environment. The project reflects OCS and Scottish Autism’s commitment to social value and inclusivity.

The Brief

Scottish Autism empowers autistic individuals to lead happy, healthy and fulfilling lives. Established in 1968 by a group of parents, it has grown to become the largest provider of autism-specific services in Scotland. As a leading authority and advocate for best practices in autism support, Scottish Autism helps individuals with autism to live meaningful lives and gain recognition as valued members of their communities.

The Outcome

The project involved refurbishing the existing sensory room to meet the needs of the young people. The aim was to create an internal space with an external feel. The works included:

  • Sensory effective flooring
  • A bespoke mural including user drawings
  • Bespoke lighting and sound system
  • Sensory equipment, including a swing and a quiet corner

The project began in November 2022 and was completed in early March 2023.

The new sensory room has enriched the learning experience for the pupils at New Struan School. It supports sensory regulation and is integrated into the daily curriculum, offering a space that enhances the students’ overall well-being. The school community received the project well, with positive feedback from staff and students.

BEST Outcomes

  • We delivered a sensory environment tailored to the needs of autistic students, enhancing their daily experience through thoughtful design and collaborative planning. User-drawn artwork helped create a space that feels personal and inclusive.
  • By integrating the sensory room into the daily curriculum, the space now supports focused learning and emotional regulation, helping students remain engaged and productive throughout the school day.
  • This project is an example of effective cross-sector collaboration, with OCS, SCTS and partners contributing skills and resources. The approach aligns with best practice in inclusive design and stakeholder engagement.
  • Creating a sensory space that helps students manage stress and regulate emotions strengthens the school community’s resilience.
  • The positive feedback from staff and students, combined with measurable improvements in student well-being and engagement, highlights the tangible impact of the project on educational and social outcomes.

“Working with OCS was just incredible! From start to finish, the generosity, interest in the needs of our young people and the attention to detail in enhancing this space was beyond our expectations. We now have a calm, flexible space which allows the young people to have their needs supported in ways most helpful and meaningful to them. Together, we were able to elevate the traditional idea of what a sensory room is. We welcome any opportunity to work with OCS in the future.”
