Executive Summary

OCS reconfigured non-clinical areas at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary to deliver 58 renal and critical care beds. The work was completed on time, to specification and within a live hospital environment, with no disruptions to day-to-day operations.

The Brief

Edinburgh Royal Infirmary is one of Scotland’s busiest acute hospitals. It provides vital, life-saving care to patients across the region and is central to delivering specialist services, including renal and critical care.

Three healthcare professionals, seen from behind and wearing scrubs and lab coats, walk down a hospital corridor with bright lighting and a wooden floor.

The Outcome

The existing areas were fully stripped out while essential MEP services remained live. Works included civil and structural alterations, new partitions, fire compartment upgrades and full MEP installations, including heating, cooling, drainage, ventilation, power, fire alarms, medical gases, and RO water systems.

All works complied with SHTMs, British Standards, and NHS specifications. OCS collaborates closely with the Edinburgh Royals Infection Control Team to maintain hygiene and safety throughout.

OCS delivered 58 fully compliant, operational beds without disrupting hospital services. The project enhanced capacity and resilience within one of Scotland’s key healthcare facilities.
