Kieran’s Story: From Bedroom Listener to Backstage Leader

Kieran has always loved music. When he heard about Tune Up, he saw a chance to step behind the scenes and learn how gigs and festivals come to life.
“I struggle with my mental health, so I was nervous about joining and meeting new people. But I took the chance and I’m proud of myself for doing that.”
Over ten weeks, Kieran learned how to book artists, manage backstage hospitality, and work as an artist liaison at a major festival. He went from watching his favourite musicians from his bedroom to playing an active role in making live music happen.
Guided by Brighten The Corners (BTC) mentors Helen and Caitlin, Kieran gained the skills and confidence to start his own independent promotion company. He also volunteered at other events, including the First Light Festival.

“I’ve gone from being introverted and reclusive to having the confidence to speak to new people, and even on stage in front of a crowd. BTC has changed me for the better, and I’m so grateful for everything they’ve taught me.”

Shaping the Future, One Stage at a Time

We know the arts play a powerful role in building stronger, more connected communities. OCS Foundation and BTC share the same vision to create opportunities that go beyond training, giving young people the confidence, skills and experiences to shape their futures.
Our partnership delivers on three shared goals:
  • Access: Opening doors to the creative industries.
  • Skills: Providing practical, transferable knowledge.
  • Wellbeing: Offering safe, supportive spaces for growth.
Kieran’s journey shows exactly why we invest in this work.
We will continue to support BTC and their Tune Up programme so more young people can discover their potential. In partnership with BTC, we will work to create clear pathways from volunteering into paid roles, further training or launching a business – just as Kieran has done.
Music changes lives. With BTC, we’re making sure it changes even more.
