Sunflower Lanyard scheme for hidden disabilities

We’re proud to have been involved in helping create and launch the globally recognised Sunflower Lanyard Scheme. The scheme, a collaboration devised at Gatwick Airport in 2016, assists individuals with hidden disabilities in public spaces like airports. A sunflower lanyard signals to OCS colleagues and others that the individual may need additional support, understanding or time.

This discreet yet effective tool helps make spaces more inclusive and accessible for those with non-visible disabilities. Initially introduced at Gatwick Airport, the scheme has gained wide recognition and adoption, allowing people with hidden disabilities to subtly communicate their need for assistance​​.

For example, locating wheelchairs and equipment in a busy airport can lead to delays for passengers and airlines, so we use a barcoding system to locate them quickly. We also use beacon technology to track equipment and assets within the airport, while our optimised, real-time resource allocation system ensures we have the right people with the right equipment where they need to be to meet passenger needs best.
