Executive Summary
Since 2020, we’ve held Toitū Net Carbon Zero certification across our operations in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand – a commitment that’s independently audited every year to verify that we’re measuring, reducing, and offsetting our greenhouse gas emissions in line with global climate targets.
Our relationship with Toitū began in 2016, when OCS New Zealand became the first major company in our industry to achieve Toitū carbonreduce certification. Over the years, the programme has strengthened our data collection and reporting, given us a clear baseline for reduction, and helped us make measurable progress.
In 2024, we marked our eighth year of Toitū certification in New Zealand, our seventh in Australia, and our first for 1M.

Certification
Maintaining certification means we:
- Measure and report on our emissions annually, ensuring transparency and accountability
- Implement reduction strategies such as fleet electrification, energy-efficient operations, and supplier changes to lower emissions
- Offset unavoidable emissions through verified climate action projects
- Support our customers in their own ESG journeys by sharing learnings and collaborating on sustainable solutions

How We Measure
Every year, we calculate our carbon footprint using Toitū’s emanage platform, which applies emissions factors and global warming potentials from the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report. Our reporting follows ISO 14064-1:2018 and the GHG Protocol, with an operational control boundary so we include all emissions from activities we directly manage.
We source data from verified third-party suppliers – for example, Leaseplan for fleet fuel use, Ecotricity for electricity consumption, Waste Management for waste volumes, and CTM/Verve Travel for flights. Installing electricity meters across all key sites has improved measurement accuracy, replacing earlier estimates. Significance criteria ensure that all major sources are captured, including all Category 1 and 2 emissions, selected Category 3 travel and freight emissions, and Category 4 waste and transmission losses.

How Toitū Supports Us
Toitū provides the technical framework and independent verification needed to maintain our certification. This includes:
- Annual third-party audits of our emissions inventory and reduction plan
- Programme rules that define which sources to measure and acceptable evidence standards
- Emissions factors and reporting tools to ensure consistent, credible calculations
- Certification to JAS-ANZ and ISO 14065 standards, recognised in more than 60 countries
This partnership ensures our climate commitments are both credible and measurable – giving us, our colleagues, and our customers confidence that our progress is real.

Recognised Standards
Toitū certifications are accredited by the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) and were the first carbon certification programmes to meet ISO 14065 standards. Recognised in more than 60 countries, they remain a benchmark for environmental best practice – a standard we are proud to meet and maintain year after year.
Our long-standing partnership with Toitū reflects our belief that climate action requires both ambition and accountability. The process keeps us focused on what we can control, transparent about our progress, and committed to finding new ways to reduce our footprint.
“Independent verification through Toitū keeps us focused, transparent, and on track to reduce our emissions year after year.”
