At an automotive manufacturing site in Indonesia, a small landscaping initiative is supporting greener habits, practical knowledge sharing, and stronger community connections.
A nursery with a broader purpose
Landscaping plays an important role in maintaining a clean, well-presented environment across industrial sites. At an automotive manufacturing site in Indonesia, this work has taken on an additional purpose.
Nuryana, a gardener with OCS Indonesia, manages plant nurseries as part of his daily responsibilities. Alongside maintaining ornamental plants for the site, he introduced a simple idea; using the nursery space to grow food crops that could be shared.
Starting with tomato and chilli seedlings from his own home, he worked with colleagues to cultivate a small number of plants within the existing nursery setup.
Practical actions, visible results
The outcome was straightforward.
From around 20 plants, each produced between one and two kilograms of fresh produce. The harvest was shared among colleagues and customers on site.
“Since joining OCS, I’ve become more aware of the value of plants. It’s rewarding to grow something yourself and share the harvest with others.”

The initiative developed from existing responsibilities and did not require additional resources or changes to the site setup.
Extending beyond the workplace
The initiative gradually extended beyond the site.
After sharing the harvest internally, Nuryana began engaging with small food stall operators near the facility. He provided seedlings and practical guidance on how to grow food crops in limited spaces.
The focus remained on accessibility, showing that small-scale planting can still be useful.
Nuryana hopes these small gestures will inspire others to start planting at home.
“When food prices rise, planting our own can make a positive difference. I want more people to see that their garden can provide food and nutrition for their families.”
Supporting everyday sustainability
The impact goes beyond the volume of produce.
It supports practical steps towards sustainability, encourages self-reliance, and strengthens connections between colleagues, customers, and the surrounding community. It also shows how everyday service roles can contribute to wider outcomes.
Recognised through action
Nuryana’s contribution was recognised through the OCS Indonesia True Star Programme in the Unity category.
The recognition reflects consistent effort and the ability to turn routine work into something that supports others.
For his dedication, Nuryana received recognition through the OCS Indonesia True Star Programme in the Unity category. He remains committed to developing his skills and caring for the environment around him.
“Small actions can create a big impact when we stay committed. There is no instant success. Everything begins with small steps.”
